Students enrolled in William Marvin Bass Elementary School shall participate in a school uniforms program.


The Lynchburg City School Board believes that school uniforms will affect positive change in schools particularly by:

  • Reducing peer pressure
  • Increasing safety and security
  • Eliminating the wearing of inappropriate clothing items
  • Improving personal responsibility and accountability
  • Preparing for the workplace, and
  • Reinforcing positive behavior

Bass Elementary Dress Attire for Students

All Clothing
  • Clothing should fit the child; however, one size increase for growth is permissible. Garments that do not fit properly will not be tolerated including oversized, undersized and skin-tight garments.
  • Garments must be free of labels and graphics of any kind. The only logo that may be worn on uniform clothing is the Bass Elementary logo which can be ordered at Universal Tee’s.
Shirts for Boys and Girls
  • Traditional two or three button polo shirts (short or long sleeved) in solid colors of hunter green, navy blue or light blue.
  • Oxford cloth/broadcloth dress shirts (short or long sleeved) in light blue only.
  • All shirts must be tucked in such that the waistband or belt is visible. If layered, both shirts must be tucked in and no designs from the undershirts should show through.
Lower wear for Boys: pants and shorts
  • Khaki (tan not bone, white, or off-white) or navy blue cotton or poly-cotton twill.
  • Shorts must be close to the knee or lower.
  • Cargo-style pants are not allowed.
Other wear for Girls – (Pants, Capri pants, Shorts, Skorts, Skirts, Jumpers)
  • Khaki (tan not bone, white, or off-white) or navy blue cotton or poly-cotton twill.
  • Shorts, skorts, skirts, and jumpers must be close to the knee or lower. Capri pants may not be hip-huggers.
  • If there are belt loops, a belt must be worn.
  • Belts may be black or brown with plain buckles and no embellishment.
Shoes and socks
  • If shoes have laces, they must be laced up and tied.
  • Shoes may not have heels higher than one inch.
  • No flip-flops, beach sandals, or shoes without backs.
  • Socks must be black, navy, white, or khaki and must match.
  • Children with disabilities will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
  • Exceptions to this policy will be at the Principal’s discretion.

Note: any item that is worn to school must not undermine the integrity of this uniform policy, serve as a disruption to the educational process, or present a health or safety hazard to an individual or his peers.

Uniforms may be purchased anywhere (as long as they meet the dress code) including the following vendors: Belk, JC Penny, Rugged Wearhouse, Target, or Wal-Mart.

Annual Opt-Out, Exemptions and Procedures

Any student, who, together with his/her parent/guardian, is conscientiously opposed to wearing the school uniform may request an exemption. For more information, see School Board Regulation 7-33.3.
