Heritage Elementary School is committed to the academic and social development of the children whom we serve. Through the combined efforts of the child, his/her parents, the school’s staff, and the community we strive to ensure that each child is respected as an individual while at the same time develops into a contributing citizen of a global society.

Heritage Elementary School serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade five. Our curriculum is determined by the Virginia Standards of Learning and implemented by a dedicated staff of teachers and other professionals. A very active PTA and a large number of parent and community volunteers also work along side our staff to facilitate the education of each child. In addition our Partners in Education - Weyerhaeuser Paper Company, Bull’s Steak House,  Toys “R” Us, Cattle Annie’s, Lynchburg Fire Department Station #8, Heritage United Methodist Church, Spectrum Video, Lynchburg Education Association, McDonald’s (Timberlake Road), Texas Roadhouse , Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church and Home Depot are active in promoting the educational goals of our school.

Technology & Media

Our teachers continually strive to provide a stimulating learning environment for our children. Two twenty-five station, networked PC computer labs with Internet access and a ten station acceleration lab are available for use by our students. Our automated media library center provides students with access to a variety of books, periodicals, and other reference materials.

Reading Incentives

Students are encouraged to read through the Accelerated Reader program which provides an assessment of the students’ reading and the opportunity to earn tangible rewards. Students earn a Book Patch for each 100 books that they read and a trophy when they have read 1000 books. We also have implemented STAR, a technological reading assessment which provides diagnostic reading information for all students in grades 2 through 5.

Academic Incentives

Students are recognized for their academic accomplishments through the A-Team and Honor Roll. We have also implemented enrichment programs for students in grades 3 through 5 to ensure their success on Standards of Learning tests.

Citizenship Incentives

In addition to recognizing academic success and promise, we seek to acknowledge students for good citizenship through Good Citizens of the Nine Weeks. Students are encouraged to resolve conflicts with other students through the Peer Mediation program. Project Double Team blends the support of local businesses with selected students and high school athletes. These older students serve as coaches and role models for the younger athletes as they interact socially and in sports activities. The Big Buddy school mentoring program is a collaborative program with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia in which a screened and trained mentors provide support, encouragement, and a positive role model for selected students.

Enrichment Activities

These include the Heritage Pride Drum and Flag Team, the only elementary school team of its kind in this area, and the SCA, which gives our students an opportunity to learn from their participation in the democratic process. In addition our students are given the opportunity to receive Suzuki violin instruction on a weekly basis. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are given the opportunity to participate in an SOL enrichment program that is designed to build on classroom instruction to improve students’ SOL scores.

Parental and Community Involvement

Our school is supported by our active partners in education. We also have a very involved PTO. In addition, our Roving Readers program encourages parents and other interested persons to visit our classrooms and read to our students. Men at Work encourages fathers and other significant men in our students’ lives to visit their classrooms, participate in activities, and have lunch with our students.

Heritage Elementary School is a unique blend of professional, student, parental, and community involvement which proves over and over again that “Together we can make good things happen”.
