Students at E. C. Glass and Heritage High School are turning competition into opportunity for the City of Lynchburg. For roughly a month leading up to November 4th Jug Bowl at City Stadium (ECG vs HHS) both schools will collect money and turkeys for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The food bank serves roughly 15,000 people in Lynchburg each month. More than 4,000 of those people are children.
In fact, this year the food bank will serve 1.9 million meals in Lynchburg.
Both schools are asking for the community’s help in this effort. During the 3rd Annual Turkey Challenge donations of $15 (the cost of a turkey) or more will be taken at either high school. In return the donor will receive 2 tickets to the Jug Bowl. In addition, both schools are encouraging all of their extra-curricular groups, their Student Council Association and their athletic teams to help raise funds.
Donations will be taken until right before halftime of the November 4th game. A freezer truck from the food bank will also be at the game collecting frozen turkeys. The school that collects the most money will be recognized during halftime of the game.
Last year’s competition bought 488 turkeys for local families. The schools hope to collectively exceed that amount during this year’s drive.
