Students with physical disabilities at Sandusky Middle School have received a gift that will give them greater independence and mobility to participate during movement education classes.
Nancy Wellons, Founder and President of Wheels on the James, arranged for the donation of a AmTryke, which is a therapeutic cycle for individuals with disabilities who are unable to ride a traditional bike or are limited in other physical activities. At Sandusky Middle School, Special Education teacher Brian Jablonski says there are specific students who will greatly benefit from this donation, and they will be able to participate in more activities with students during movement education class.
The donation of the tryke was a community effort. Wheels on the James arranged for the donation to SMS; the Lynchburg Community Trust provided the funds for the tryke; and the Lynchburg Fire Department put the tryke together. Without teamwork like this, Ms. Wellons said the donation wouldn’t have been possible.
Wheels on the James hopes to raise awareness of the program and reach out to other schools in the region that may benefit from this equipment.
