Sixteen Culinary Arts students earned medals and brought home more than $24,000 in scholarship prize money when they competed in the state leadership conference in Virginia Beach in April.         

The students from E.C. Glass and Heritage high schools competed in the STAR Events as part of the Family Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state competition. They joined 650 students from across the state who gathered to compete in 27 events designed to demonstrate proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills. 

The students also participated in a weekend of workshops and sessions that challenged, informed, and motivated members and their advisers to learn more about leadership through FCCLA.

 FCCLA is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences.  This organization has more than 219,000 members in over 5,500 chapters, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

LCS students were awarded the following:

  • Hannah Bragg: 1st place-Portfolio & Exhibit-Cake Decorating (Gold medal)
  • Sarah Saville:1st place-Portfolio & Exhibit-Patisserie (Silver medal)
  • Khiande Richards: 2nd place-Portfolio & Exhibit-Patisserie (Silver medal)
  • Francheszka Saenz*: 2nd place-Portfolio & Exhibit-Showpiece (Gold medal)
  • Lakita Spinner: 3rd place-Portfolio & Exhibit-Showpiece (Silver medal)
  • Brittany Darby, Sarah Daugherty, & Arielle Lubrano: 2nd place-Live Culinary (out of 21 teams) (Silver medal)
  • Michael Edwards*, Kayla Pianowski, & Blair Rucker*: 4th place-Live Culinary (out of 21 teams) (Silver medal)
  • Mia Fulton: 2nd place-Creative Centerpiece (Bronze medal)
  • Brian McCorkle: 4th place-Job Interview (Silver medal)
  • Patrick Amerell: 4th place-Classic Knife Cuts & Chicken Fabrication (Bronze medal)
  • Darnell Chambers: 5th place-Classic Knife Cuts and Chicken Fabrication (Bronze medal)
  • LaChina Carter: Illustrated Talk-(Bronze medal)

(Medals are determined by the amount of points the students accumulate)

In other Career-Technical Education news, all of the senior Dental Careers students passed their Virginia Radiation Safety course in Richmond.  They are: Arnetia Arnold, Hunter Carter, Tenesha Davis, Katelynn  Hall, Quanisha Haythe, Shanitra Jackson, Danashia Johnson, Katelyn Jones, Chantel Molina, Kaela Parrish*.

* Denotes Heritage High School students. All other students are from E. C. Glass.
