Starting with the 2026-27 school year, any student who did not attend pre-kindergarten at Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) will be required to complete a brief screening assessment before starting kindergarten at LCS.

To be eligible for kindergarten at LCS, students must be five years old by Sept. 30, 2026, and live in the city of Lynchburg.

If you’re not available on these dates, please contact your child’s school.

Why Screening?

These screenings will assess children’s developmental readiness for kindergarten, taking into account language, cognitive development, socioemotional skills, motor skills, and more.

Screenings will help ease the transition to kindergarten by empowering children to start their elementary school journeys strong, preparing them for future academic success. They will also help schools determine whether additional classroom support is needed and map out class placements and sizes before the school year begins.
