Six very talented musicians from Lynchburg City Schools recently performed at the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra concert in Richmond. There were three All-Virginia ensembles, including two bands and one full orchestra. Each ensemble had about 100 student members.
Jun Young Park of Heritage High School played the clarinet, and Mary Ellen Golcheski, from E. C. Glass, played the oboe. Both performed in the Concert Band under the direction of John Carmichael, director of bands at the University of South Florida. They performed music by David Stanhope and John Williams, among others.
Sarah Catherine Straw and Joseph Seo played the violin, and Greg Childress and Dudley Raine played the viola. All four performed in the Orchestra under the direction of Alexander Kordzaia, Music Director of the University of Richmond. They played masterworks by Dvorak, Saint-Saens, and Holst.
The numbers of students selected each year to the All-Virginia event continuously goes up, and this year the four orchestra students chosen is the most in the history of E. C. Glass.
More than 140 public and private high school band and orchestra programs from 118 schools were represented at this event.
