Cadets from E. C. Glass High School’s JROTC program recently competed in Level I of a nationwide JROTC Academic Bowl and qualified to advance and compete in upcoming national championships.
According to team Captain Annmarie Taheny, this is the first year ECG cadets have advance to the national championship. “We felt we did pretty well in round one, but we were all pleasantly surprised to learn we actually advanced to nationals.”
The annual JROTC Academic Bowl is sponsored by the College Options Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the academic development of high school students and assisting them in their preparation for higher education. “Their emphasis lies with serving military families and students who participate in JROTC,” said Lt. Col. Leslie Pratt, ECG Aerospace Science Instructor.
The knowledge areas in the challenge tests are JROTC curriculum, high school math, and science and language arts. “It’s a broad spectrum of disciplines, so preparing for competition basically comes down to staying continually engaged in all classes, not just JROTC,” Taheny said.
The national competition will be held on March 18.
