Dunbar Middle School is honoring one of the state’s best high school basketball players, Wheeler Hughes, with a presentation and retirement of the No. 12 jersey during halftime of the boys basketball game on Monday, February 10th.
Mr. Hughes is a 1966 graduate of Dunbar High School. He averaged double figures on the boys basketball team in scoring and in assists, and nearly the same in rebounds. His athletic success earned him the title of All-Western District, All-Tournament, All-State and MVP in the Virginia Interscholastic Association State Tournament. He earned All-Tournament Honors in leading the Dunbar High School basketball team to second place in the National Interscholastic High School Championship in Montgomery, Alabama.
Wheeler's leadership as a student and captain of the basketball team as well as his academic accomplishments earned him a scholarship to Kansas State University in 1966 where he continued to excel as a student athlete.
Mr. Earnest Hubbard, a classmate of Mr. Hughes, will be in attendance during the presentation to give an introduction and biography of Mr. Hughes, who will be traveling from Maryland to attend the event.
