Lindley Crosby holding Excellence in Science certificate

E. C. Glass High School 12th grader Lindley Crosby was announced as the winner of the Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) Education Foundation’s prestigious Excellence in Science scholarship at the school board meeting on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The $16,000 scholarship, awarded annually to one outstanding senior interested in entering a science-related field of study, will support Crosby as they pursue a degree in environmental science at George Mason University.

“This year’s recipient embodies the very essence of what this scholarship was designed to honor,” said LCS Education Foundation Executive Director Dawn Wise. “Lindley’s true desire to help change the world is unmistakable.”

Crosby, a Central Virginia Governor’s School (CVGS) student, is a top academic performer who excels in environmental science. Last year, they represented the Central Virginia region at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair at Old Dominion University. Their award-winning science project tested the effects of pesticides on early-stage corn growth.

Crosby has devoted their time in high school to preparing for a future career in environmental science. Last spring, they interned at BWX Technologies, Inc., shadowing two environmental scientists to learn about their work firsthand. Crosby also participates in a wide range of extracurricular activities, most notably serving as a Girl Scout Ambassador.

After earning their undergraduate degree, Crosby plans to join the U. S. Coast Guard as a scientist responding to humanitarian and environmental crises. Afterward, they plan to pursue a master’s degree in the environmental science field, which they’ll use to launch a career in watershed protection and environmental management. Eventually, Crosby would like to pursue a doctorate, preferably focusing on environmental and watershed sustainability.

“Environmental conservation is an issue I care deeply about, and I am enthusiastic about finding solutions to environmental problems,” Crosby said in their scholarship application essay. “I’ve been captivated by the environment for as long as I can remember because nature has always felt like home; time spent outside splashing in the water or trekking mountains with my family nurtured a deep appreciation and curiosity for the natural world.”

This LCS scholarship, founded in 2013 by the family of Dr. Charles and Mary Jane Pryor, is awarded annually to a single top science or engineering graduating senior. It is funded by Dr. Charles and Mary Jane Pryor, BWX Technologies, Inc., and Sharon Ainslie. The LCS Education Foundation serves as the fiscal agent and facilitator.
