Director of Facilities with winners of Fall 2024 Golden Dustpan Awards

Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) presented the Custodial School of Distinction Awards for the fall 2024 semester at the Lynchburg City School Board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17. These biannual awards recognize custodial teams going above and beyond to cultivate clean and safe school environments.

Nicknamed the “Golden Dustpan Award,” the School of Distinction award crowns the schools sustaining the highest levels of sanitation and maintenance. The Most Improved award recognizes the schools that have demonstrated the most progress in meeting and exceeding standards.

The following awards were presented:

Secondary Schools
  • School of Distinction - Dunbar Middle School for Innovation
  • Honorable Mention - Linkhorne Middle School
Elementary Schools
  • School of Distinction - Heritage Elementary School
  • Honorable Mention - Sheffield Elementary School
  • Most Improved - Linkhorne Elementary School
Non-Traditional Schools
  • School of Distinction - LAUREL Regional School

These awards are part of a focused initiative to enhance learning spaces across the division. Buildings undergo regular standardized inspections, and administrators work with custodial staff to help schools improve when needed.

Custodians work hard to foster physical environments in which students and staff can thrive. They are critical members of our school communities, contributing meaningfully to students’ educational experiences through their work behind the scenes.
