For the second year in a row, a Lynchburg City Schools teacher has been selected by a state panel as the Region V Teacher of the Year!
Hutcherson Early Learning Program’s Gerin Martin is now among eight teachers across the state eligible for selection as Virginia’s Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Martin was surprised with balloons and flowers as well as a certificate from the Virginia Department of Education and a letter from the governor during her weekly preschool community playgroup at the Daniel’s Hill community center.
Ms. Martin, who was chosen last May as the LCS Teacher of the Year, is a preschool special education and pre-Kindergarten teacher. She is also well known for her instruction that goes far beyond the walls of the Hutcherson classrooms, and her Preschool Community Playgroups, in their second year, have recently been highlighted by the Virginia Department of Education for its innovative effort to improve outcomes for students.
“We know that Early Childhood Education plays a significant role in a child’s success later in school,” said Superintendent Scott Brabrand. “Ms. Martin’s work underlies our commitment to ensure all children have access to the educational environments they need in order to be ready for Kindergarten. We are fortunate to have Ms. Martin and all her early education colleagues working on the behalf of all preschool students in the city of Lynchburg."
