Four Dunbar Middle School students won awards in the junior division postcard design category of the annual history contest sponsored by the Civil War Trust and the History Channel.
This year’s contest theme, “Preserving 150 Years of History: Life at War,” aligned with 6th-grade History and English curriculum. Students spent months learning about the Civil War in both classes and went on a field trip to Appomattox Court House National Park to learn more. At the culmination of their studies, students entered the contest to compete nationally for four honors: First through third place and honorable mention. All honors include a year membership to the Civil War Trust, subscription to a history magazine, and recognition on the organization’s website. In addition, the first place winner receives a cash prize of $1,000, second place $750, and third place $250. All four honors were secured by Dunbar Middle School students, a first in contest history.
