E. C. Glass High School students are stepping up again this year to help girls in Central Virginia who may be financially unable to buy a prom dress.
Becca's Closet is a national, non-profit organization that donates formal dresses to high school girls who are unable to purchase them. Last year the E.C. Glass chapter served more than 50 girls. The group is available through June 1st for fittings to help girls find a suitable dress. Students who need a dress can contact their guidance counselor at their high school. He or she will contact the SCA at Glass and set up a confidential meeting to try on the gowns.
The organization was created to honor the work of Rebecca Kirtman who died in an automobile accident in August 2003. In spring of that year, Becca single-handedly collected and distributed more than 250 prom dresses to needy girls in South Florida so that they could attend their high school proms.
Recognizing a need right here in Lynchburg, the Student Council Association of E. C. Glass applied for and was granted permission to start a local chapter of Becca’s Closet. It all started with a few determined girls who went out and got dresses donated by Celebration Bridal on Main Street. These gowns are all new, never before worn dresses. E. C. Glass and Liberty High School are the only two chapters in the state of Virginia. They serve Danville, Nelson County, Amherst, Roanoke, and the Lynchburg schools.
