The Virginia Department of Education has released the 2011-2012 school accreditation results. Lynchburg City School administrators are pleased that 15 of our 16 schools are fully accredited once again and are preparing students and teachers for the revised math tests that will be administered in the spring of 2012.
Middle school math scores remain a focus for the curriculum and instruction team. “We will work through our benchmark assessments to give teachers information about what skills our students have not yet mastered,” says Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Al Coleman. “Middle school math scores need to improve.” Teachers will also receive support from the secondary math specialist.
Middle school students have access to additional time and support during their enrichment periods (time during the school day for remediation in specifically identified subject areas) and by participating in the 21st Century Grant program at their respective middle schools. Administrators throughout the Lynchburg City School Division are committed to supporting their teachers and students and will “provide additional time and support on an individual student basis,” says Coleman
To help explain accreditation--including new elements that tie into accreditation determination for the first time this year--the VDOE Office of Communications developed an informational briefing document “Accountability & Virginia Public Schools – 2011-2012.” The PDF version is located at www.doe.virginia.gov/statistics_reports/school_report_card/accountability_guide.pdf
