Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) is committed to providing safe, healthy, and comfortable learning and working environments in our school buildings. Maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important part of supporting the health and well-being of our students and staff.

Reporting Indoor Air Quality Concerns

Students, families, and staff who have concerns about indoor air quality in an LCS facility should contact the Director of Facilities & Maintenance at (434) 515-5120 or [email protected]. Reported concerns will be reviewed, investigated, and addressed as appropriate.

Indoor Air Quality Inspections

In accordance with Virginia Code § 22.1-141.5, public school divisions are required to conduct an industry-recognized uniform inspection and evaluation of the HVAC system in each public school building at least once every four years. Required evaluations include:

  1. Testing for maximum filter efficiency.
  2. Physical measurements of outside air delivery rate.
  3. Verification of the appropriate condition and operation of ventilation components.
  4. Measurement of air distribution system outside air, return air, and supply air and static pressure readings across all air handling unit components, including filters, coils, and fans.
  5. Verification of unit operation and that required maintenance has been performed in accordance with the most recent indoor ventilation standards promulgated by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
  6. Verification of carbon dioxide sensors and acceptable carbon dioxide concentrations indoors.
  7. Collection of field data for the installation of mechanical ventilation if none exists.

LCS will prepare a written report of inspection findings, including any necessary corrective actions. Reports will be made available for public review at a regularly scheduled school board meeting and on the LCS website.
