In October, Lynchburg City Schools announced that we would be taking the important step to implement walk-through metal detectors at our high schools.

Starting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, metal detectors will be placed at E. C. Glass High School. All E. C. Glass students and visitors will be required to pass through the metal detectors upon entering the building each day. This safety measure will enhance the security of our schools and create an environment where all students can thrive.

Note: Only trained LCS personnel—including School Security Officers—and administrators will perform metal detector screenings.

How will this work?
  1. Students will enter through door 27 in the morning. There will be multiple screeners to choose from; students with band instruments or sports equipment bags should use the center/middle line.
  2. Each student will be screened by a walk-through or hand-held metal detector.
  3. If the metal detector goes off, the student will step aside to a separate area so a staff member can determine the cause. All bags are subject to search.
  4. If a student is found attempting to bring a prohibited item into the school building, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
  5. Once a student successfully passes through the metal detectors, their belongings will be returned to them, and they will proceed into the building.

If a student refuses to be screened, they will not be granted entry, and a parent or guardian will be contacted.

Because this process is new for our school community, students will experience delays in the beginning. Our goal is to be as quick and efficient as possible while maintaining the safety and security of our school. If a student is tardy because of a metal detector screening, they will be excused.

What will set the metal detectors off?

Please be aware that the following items will set the metal detectors off and slow down the arrival process.

  • Athletic bags containing cleats, baseball bats, and other items
  • Musical instruments
  • Three-ring binders (larger than 1.5”) and large binder clips
  • Keys and keychains
  • Metal water bottles
  • Large belt buckles
  • Aluminum cans or metal aerosol cans
  • Backpacks with anti-theft mesh
  • Any items containing metal

These metal detectors will enhance campus security, allowing students and staff to focus on learning and providing families with peace of mind. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we strive to uphold the safety of our school community.
