All four Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) pre-kindergarten sites were recognized for their commitment to quality early care and education by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for the 2023-24 school year. The Pre-K sites at Carl B. Hutcherson Early Learning Center and Perrymont, R. S. Payne, and Paul Munro elementary schools met expectations under the Unified Virginia Quality Birth to Five System (VQB5), a program that measures and improves the quality of publicly-funded birth-to-five early learning programs.

"Our LCS Pre-K program's VQB5 quality ratings demonstrate our commitment to excellence. Quality early learning matters, and we're proud to be recognized by the VDOE for our dedication to holistic student success,” said LCS Pre-K Coordinator Renee Anderson.

The VQB5 measures the quality of early childhood educational programs based on two nationally-recognized indicators: interactions and curriculum. Research shows that stimulating and supportive interactions between teachers and students, as well as effective use of quality curriculum, promote children’s learning and development and result in improved school preparedness.

Each of the four LCS Pre-K sites were observed in the fall and the spring of the 2023-24 school year as part of the VQB5. All were found to demonstrate quality teacher-student interactions, and all were using VDOE-approved curriculum.
