Science at the Virtual Academy - pictures of science experiments

If you thought hands-on science was impossible in virtual learning, think again! Here at the Virtual Academy, our students are still able to engage in explorations, learning key concepts along the way.

In 6th grade, Life Science students are learning about cells, their selectively permeable membrane, and osmosis. To model osmosis, students viewed the movement of water into and out of a raw egg. After the shell was dissolved away, the membrane-bound egg cell was placed in different solutions that changed the equilibrium of the water molecules on either side of the membrane, causing movement. The experiment was made available for students to do at home as well, and data collected by both the teacher and students was analyzed.
