Hutcherson Early Learning Center provides services for children 2-5 years of age who are eligible for special education services.  We have a team of professionals including special education teachers, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapist, physical therapist and more to serve your child in their least restrictive environment.

Identification and Eligibility

A child suspected of a disability or delay can be referred for evaluation by calling (434) 515-5180 or faxing the referral request to (434) 522-2323. The school-based team will meet to review and respond to the request within 10 days.  If a disability or delay is suspected the evaluation process is initiated.  Eligibility is determined based on Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) criteria.  Transfer students from out of state will be re-evaluated to determine eligibility based on VDOE criteria.

Services may include special education instruction/support, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, services for hearing impairment or vision impairment.

Services are provided within a child’s least restrictive or natural environment along a continuum of placements as determined by the Individual Education Program (IEP) team. Children may be served in the home, community playgroup, community preschool program, Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) inclusion classroom, center-based playgroup, special education classroom or through individual sessions with providers.
