This is your Board Meeting Brief for the September 6th School Board Meeting.

The School Board welcomed new Student School Board Representatives Cameron Pflieger of E. C. Glass and Kailyn Snyder of Heritage. Both students are seniors and are excited to be the representatives of their schools.

Director of Student Services, Dr. Derrick Brown, provided an update on student wellness and quality of life. The Student Services Department plans to evaluate and restructure a social emotional learning and character education program, and will review and revise current behavior management strategies, responses to trauma, and suspension practices. These measures are expected to reduce the number of behavioral referrals and out-of-school suspensions. Dr. Brown is creating a team to develop alternatives to suspensions to improve behavior outcomes.

Later in the meeting, the School Board adopted a resolution not to authorize collective bargaining. Previously, the Lynchburg Education Association along with transportation employees had requested that the School Board consider this request. However, the Board determined that collective bargaining is not the most appropriate procedure for the division at this time. The Board reaffirmed its commitment to providing a means for employees to resolve matters concerning the terms and conditions of employment through the policies and procedures of LCS Human Resources. LCS will continue to promote a positive workplace environment for its employees and open doors to management where employees' concerns may be heard and addressed.
